Answers for Associations started with a question we kept hearing.
Actually, two of them.
“Who should we talk to about this?”
“Is anyone doing this well?”
Not because people weren’t capable, but because the work is complex and often isolating. Association professionals were leading change, juggling expectations, and making big decisions, mostly without a trusted group to bounce ideas off. There wasn’t one place to go for practical advice that truly understood their world. Just a lot of people quietly reinventing the wheel.
Even in busy organisations, it could still feel like carrying the work alone.
Those questions were never just about information.
They were about connection.

By 2017, Angela Shelton and Belinda Moore had heard them often enough to know this was not a one off.
The same conversations were happening everywhere, across different roles, organisations, and sectors. So they created a space where association and not for profit professionals could talk honestly about what was working, what was not, and what they were trying next. A place to share what had been learned, ask the real questions, and move forward faster because no one should have to do it alone.
The name came easily. It was not about being clever or catchy. It was about purpose. Connecting people to what they needed most in that moment: answers, clarity, and support.
That’s how Answers for Associations began.
Where Connection Really Took Shape
In 2018, we really saw this idea come to life through the experiences we brought people into. We hosted our first Association Leaders Retreat in Alice Springs, in partnership with Northern Territory Business Events and Adrian Segar, one of the pioneers of the unconference movement.
From early on, we knew traditional industry events weren’t the answer. So, we did things differently, gathering people in the heart of the red centre. No slide decks. No stage. No one talking at you for hours. Instead, the experience was built around the people in the room, their challenges, their questions, and the things they were actually trying to solve back at work.
Then came Association Annie. Born from the real stories of association life, the chaos, the quirks, the endless meetings, and the quiet wins, Annie became a reminder that even serious work deserves a sense of humour. Her stories helped the community laugh, recognise themselves, and remember we’re human while doing important work.

Connection That Keeps Going
In 2020, when the world shut down, the need for connection exploded. Conferences stopped and borders closed, but the need to learn from each other only grew. So, we built an online community where association professionals could keep sharing, supporting each other, and working things through in real time.
What began as a lifeline quickly became one of our strongest foundations. Today, it is anchored by Ask the Community, where members swap ideas, solve problems, and help each other move forward every day. Because when we pool what we know, we all move faster.
As the community grew, it became clear that leaders also wanted deeper connection beyond annual events. That’s how the Association Leaders eXchanges came to life. Smaller, more personal gatherings, guided by expert facilitators, where real challenges are explored openly and questions turn into practical solutions. They quickly became a cornerstone of how we bring people together.
Sharing Stories Beyond the Room
Learning From the Front Line
From bringing leaders together to talk honestly about AI through Associations Reimagined: AI & the Digital Frontier, to launching the Global Association Research Initiative (GARI), we’ve been learning alongside the sector. Paying close attention to how associations are building impact around purpose, navigating change in real time, and discovering what’s possible when leaders learn together instead of in isolation.
