Why Audiences Participate – and Why They Don't | MCI
Associations often think about engagement through the lens of generations.
Gen Z wants this, Millennials expect that, while Gen X and Baby Boomers behave differently again.
Those distinctions can be useful, but they can also become shortcuts that oversimplify why people actually choose to participate.
Today’s audiences are shaped by much more than age, including their behaviours, values, expectations of trust, attitudes towards sustainability and purpose, and the different ways they choose to engage.
For associations, that means the challenge is not simply to create a different campaign for each generation. It is to understand what motivates people to participate, where assumptions may be getting in the way, and how experiences can be designed for audiences that increasingly span multiple generations.
In this resource, MCI Australia, in collaboration with insidery GmbH, introduces research designed to challenge common generational assumptions and translate audience insight into practical engagement approaches for campaigns, events and communities.
The rules of engagement are shifting
Today’s audiences are not defined by age alone. They are shaped by behaviours, values, expectations of trust, sustainability, purpose and the different ways they choose to participate.
That is why MCI, in collaboration with insidery GmbH, has launched Decoding generational behaviours, motivations and myths - a new report exploring how Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X and Baby Boomers connect, decide and engage across professional and association ecosystems.
Created with insights from mci group’s global expertise and two global surveys, the report cuts through generational myths and translates evidence-backed insights into practical engagement playbooks.

Five things that Decoding generational behaviours, motivations and myths will help with:
1. Understanding what motivates people to take part
2. Seeing where generational assumptions can get in the way
3. Shaping campaigns and experiences for mixed-generation audiences
4. Putting the research to work i n practical ways
5. Preparing for the trends changing audience behaviour
What's inside?
The 47-page report draws on two global surveys, thousands of audience interactions and mci group's global experience. It includes:
- Insights that challenge common assumptions about each generation
- A clearer picture of how audience behaviour, motivations and expectations shape participation
- Practical playbooks to help you create more relevant campaigns, events and communities
- Real client case stories showing how audience-focused design can improve participation, satisfaction and long-term engagement
- A look at how AI, sustainability, community and Gen Alpha are reshaping what comes next.

To discover what is shaping participation now and the practical actions that can turn insight into stronger engagement
For associations, stronger engagement starts with understanding people as they are, rather than designing around assumptions about the generation they belong to.
Generational insight can provide useful context, but the stronger opportunity is to understand the behaviours, motivations and expectations that actually influence whether someone chooses to participate.
For association leaders, there is a useful question to consider:
Are we designing engagement around what we know our audiences value, or around what we assume people of a particular generation should want?
If the answer is unclear, the starting point is better evidence. Look at what motivates participation, where expectations differ, how mixed-generation audiences experience your organisation and what is changing in the environment around them.
The objective is not to remove generational thinking altogether, it is to use it more intelligently, alongside behavioural insight, audience research and a clearer understanding of what creates trust, relevance and connection.
MCI’s full report goes further, providing practical playbooks, client examples and insights into how AI, sustainability, community and Gen Alpha may continue reshaping audience behaviour.
A big thank you to MCI Australia for sharing this research and contributing practical thinking around audience participation, engagement and the changing expectations of association communities.
